Ensuring Safe Drinking Water for Children in Schools and Child Care Centers

What is Michigan Filter First?

Filter First describes a collection of Michigan laws designed to protect children from exposure to lead in drinking water. The Clean Drinking Water Access Act (HB 4341) and amendments to the Child Care Organization Act (HB 4342) are collectively known as Filter First. This legislation is the first in the nation to specifically protect children from exposure to lead in drinking water in schools and child care centers.

To comply with Michigan Filter First requirements, schools and child care centers in Michigan must do three things:

  1. Water Management Plan

Schools and child care centers must develop a comprehensive plan.

  2. Install Lead-Reducing Filters

Filters must be installed on all fixtures dispensing drinking water.

Why Filter Drinking Water in Schools?

Murdock Maintenance Advantage® bottle fillers and water coolers simplify routine maintenance, helping you comply with Filter First regulations more easily.
