New Ohio Code Requires Water Bottle Filling Stations in Education Buildings

City of Industry, Calif. — April 21, 2021

A new Ohio code, effective April 12, 2021, stipulates new requirements for drinking fountains and water bottle fillers in schools.

New educational facility construction projects receiving state assistance are now required to:

  • Install a minimum of two water bottle filling stations in each classroom facility;
  • Install a minimum of one water bottle filling station or drinking fountain per floor or wing in each building; and
  • Install at least one drinking fountain or water bottle filling station for every projected 100 students that will attend the school.

Additionally, it stipulates that the school board or governing body will ensure that each water refill station and drinking fountain will be regularly cleaned and maintained. This way, students will receive the benefits of reliable drinking water.

This new code “shows our support for students and recognizes the importance of clean and accessible drinking water for all,” says Ohio State Rep. Erica C. Crawley.

Having access to reliable drinking water is important for students. Water is a healthy alternative to sugary juices and sodas, and staying hydrated may help to improve students’ cognitive function, according to the CDC

Luckily, Murdock has a wealth of indoor and outdoor water bottle fillers, as well as indoor and outdoor drinking fountains that are perfect for schools! Many can even be customized with school logos.
